A few months ago, we launched the call for applications for the BeOneSec Chair in Cybersecurity and Cyber Intelligence scholarships. Today, we’re delighted to share that the students are already hard at work, applying their knowledge and bringing their talent to life by developing real-world solutions that make a tangible impact in the field of cybersecurity.

Anomaly Detection in Network Traffic: Staying Ahead of the Unexpected

We operate in an environment where the pace at which threats evolve makes a proactive mindset absolutely essential — key to anticipating risks before they become real problems.

In this spirit, the first research line is focused on developing a system for detecting anomalies in unusual traffic generated by ToR bridge nodes, which use sophisticated techniques to avoid tracking.

By observing traffic patterns and defining behavioural metrics, the aim is to develop capabilities to identify deviations and signals that point to suspicious activity.

Ultimately, this model is designed to learn autonomously how to distinguish between legitimate and potentially malicious traffic, significantly enhancing response and prevention capabilities in the face of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

Automated, Scalable Cybersecurity Probe

The second research line is dedicated to designing and implementing an active auditing platform capable of carrying out on-demand tasks based on generic instructions. This probe interprets the instructions and dynamically decides which tools to launch, in what order and with which parameters, depending on the outcomes at each stage.

The solution is deployed on containerised infrastructure orchestrated with Kubernetes, allowing for a decoupled, extensible approach that can be adapted to different contexts and environments.

In parallel, the team is exploring the evolution of this platform into an automated Attack Surface Management (ASM) system, integrating open-source tools for OSINT, asset discovery, vulnerability analysis and detection of insecure configurations.

The ultimate goal is to build a modular, scalable platform that enables early identification of attack vectors and weaknesses within an organisation’s infrastructure, strengthening defensive capabilities and risk mitigation.

Learning by Doing

Through these two research lines, the BeOneSec Chair in Cybersecurity and Cyber Intelligence reaffirms its commitment to applied learning and knowledge transfer, bridging the gap between research and the real-world business environment.

With these scholarships, students are not only consolidating their technical expertise but also actively contributing to solving current, real-life challenges in the industry. This has only been possible thanks to the close collaboration between scholarship students and BeOneSec experts.

We firmly believe that investing in young talent and applied research is the best way to achieve true cyber peace of mind.
