Abstract
This chapter examines the significance of the olive grove and its agro-industrial sector in advancing sustainable development through enhanced production and the utilisation of renewable energy. To this end, the chapter assesses the various by-products for the generation of electrical and thermal energy in the region, analyzes the impact of the public policies adopted for its promotion, and identifies the primary obstacles it has faced and continues to face in improving its energy capacities. Furthermore, the analysis considers the potential impact of this development on the region from an energy, territorial, and sustainable development perspective. The findings indicate that the primary challenges historically encountered by the biomass industry pertain to the elevated costs associated with waste collection, transportation, and labor. Similarly, the regulatory changes introduced in 2012, which abolished the premium system for renewable energy sources, also represented a significant challenge for the continued deployment of such technologies.
